SUPERCHICK: LET IT ROLL - THE SONG

Superchick's new album "Reinvention" will be in stores in South Africa later this week or early next week. You can listen to their new radio single "Let It Roll" on their official Facebook page at facebook.com/Superchick.

Here's a little explanation about the song from Max:

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” (Matthew 6:25-26)

Life is beautiful, but we often forget that. One of the easiest ways we rob ourselves of joy is to spend our time worried or stressed out. When I look back at the times when I was stressed out in the past, I realize that almost none of my worrying and freaking out was helpful or necessary. I used to love the parable of the ant and the cricket. I vowed not to be the cricket singing life away while the clever ant stored up food for the winter. It is certainly a good thing to prepare, but the lie in the ant and the cricket is that we have control. As anyone who has cancer will tell you, we have no control - we only have each day we are given and the only thing we control is how much we enjoy it. It took me a long time to understand that joy is a discipline, that you can teach yourself to focus on what is important. You only get so many beautiful spring days in your life and each minute that ticks by is time we will never get back. Let’s use those minutes well. May we all live in joy and beauty.

NEEDTOBREATHE: THE OUTSIDERS (Really?!)

“We’re from a small town in South Carolina called Possum Kingdom,” NEEDTOBREATHE frontman Bear Rinehart explains when asked about the place he and his younger brother/co-writer Bo were raised. “Trust me – there was absolutely no music scene there.”

And, though he makes light of it, the relative isolation that came with growing up in such an environment must have played some part in fostering the independent-minded approach the Rinehart boys would later bring to their band. In this way, it makes perfect sense that NEEDTOBREATHE’s third album is called The Outsiders—and listening to the anthemic title track that opens the 14-song collection, it’s clear that they embrace this label as both a badge of honor and a battle cry.

The sons of an Assembly of God pastor, Bear and Bo Rinehart had inherited their father’s gift with words, and put it to good use in their songwriting; their mother taught piano, making music a constant part of their young lives. Formed in 1999, NEEDTOBREATHE (with childhood friends Joe Stillwell and Seth Bolt) built an impressive regional following, playing throughout the Southeast. Along the way, they sold more than 15,000 copies of their self-released EP’s, recorded by Seth, who had earned a degree in record engineering. 2006 saw the release of the band’s major label debut, Daylight, and a relentless, national touring schedule. Despite being on the road nearly non-stop, NEEDTOBREATHE returned the following year with The Heat, which went to #2 on the Heatseekers chart and spawned the hit single “More Time,” a top 10 success at Triple-A radio (sitting alongside established artists like Coldplay and Jack Johnson). The group’s penchant for capturing a poignant moment or eliciting an emotion with their music is evidenced by the numerous songs from each of their albums that have appeared in film and television, including the Hilary Swank-starring, motion picture P.S. I Love You and MTV’s “The Hills,” among many others.

On their latest album, The Outsiders, NEEDTOBREATHE has truly come into their own, seamlessly blending ambient, arena-ready soundscapes with a decidedly Southern sensibility. “The ‘Southern thing’ is very scary to some people,“ Bear laughs. “But for us, it’s not so much a sound than a feeling. It’s just about having some soul in the words you write, the music that you play. And it’s something that just comes naturally to us.”

It might also be that “Southern thing” that lends a soulful warmth to Bear’s distinct voice, providing the perfect foil to each song. From the soaring majesty of “Something Beautiful” to the philosophically minded ballad “These Hard Times,” his vocals are emotive yet honest, making the words he’s singing all the more powerful and moving. “Stones Under Rushing Water” (featuring Sara Watkins of the Grammy award winning group Nickel Creek) is achingly beautiful, both musically and, perhaps even more so, lyrically. “My favorite love songs are the ones that say things in the simplest terms,” Bear relates. “When you think of a song like [Percy Sledge’s] ‘When a Man Loves a Woman,’ the words just don’t get much plainer. But the emotional impact is overwhelming.”

Then there’s the blues-inflected rocker “Prisoner” with its searing guitar solo – a first for the band (“It’s about as ‘Smoke On The Water’ as NEEDTOBREATHE gets,” Bear jokes). The alt-rock edge of “Hurricane” is countered by the back-porch ease of “Won’t Turn Back” and the gospel feel of “Lay ‘Em Down.” The Peter Gabriel-esque anthem “Through Smoke” (inspired by a toy organ the group bought at a thrift store) and the orchestrally driven “Garden,” build on the album’s wide range of sounds. “We’ve never said we can’t do something because it sounds a little country or too modern rock, because then we wouldn’t be staying true to our ourselves,” Bo elaborates.

And while they defy any restrictions to the style of music they play, NEEDTOBREATHE has a very clear idea of how they want their songs to sound. “Over the past two albums, we’ve learned that you can’t look to a producer to make you great, that the magic has to come from within the band,” Bear explains. “Instead, we wanted to work with collaborators that would bring a fresh perspective and, on the practical side, a particular expertise to the table.”

To that end, the band deliberately chose to co-produce The Outsiders with three different producers with recording sessions taking place in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Charleston. “Jim Scott is an old school guy who’s produced some of our favorite records. I mean, he worked on Tom Petty’s Wildflowers… Wilco was leaving the studio when we were going in,” Bear enthuses. “He doesn’t use any Pro-Tools at all so it really challenged us as a band. Instead, he’s got a bunch of old, vintage equipment that he uses it in a really cool way. Above all, we just really felt connected to him.” A former jazz guitar teacher, Rick Beato (Shinedown, Jump Little Children) comes from what Bear calls, “a virtuoso standpoint. We knew from working with him on The Heat that he’s such a talented musician, both creatively and technically. We really came to him as our problem solver.” The third co-producer, John Alagia, worked with the likes of Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer – “Artists that were known as live artists,” Bear continues. “Every band that’s worth their salt live is trying to capture something in the studio that represents the magic that happens when they play together on stage. John helped us do that.”

And it is truly magic when the four members of NEEDTOBREATHE take the stage. The band has honed their live show the old-fashioned way – putting in the time, spending years on the road. Aside from their skillful musicianship, there’s a spontaneous energy that intangibly connects them with their audience, and their powerful performances have helped build a dedicated fan base that’s been clamoring for The Outsiders.

“We’ve seen over the years that our fans consider NEEDTOBREATHE to be a whole experience,” explains Bo. “Having a hit single is great and everything, but the only relationship a fan has with most bands like that is the three minutes they hear on the radio. We’ve always wanted something deeper than that.”

“I feel like people who listen to our band have come to be fans of our albums, which has been really rewarding,” Bear agrees. “I think NEEDTOBREATHE is bigger than any one song and that’s something we’ve always worked toward.”

Without a doubt, NEEDTOBREATHE are extremely proud of The Outsiders and can’t wait to see what will unfold for the band next. “This band is our life…it’s everything, really the only thing, that we’ve done for the last 10 years,” Bear continues, explaining that the band literally poured everything they had into The Outsiders. “We know this is the best record we’ve ever made.”

MICHAEL TAIT TO JOIN NEWSBOYS

After 22 years and more than 2000 shows, newsboys frontman Peter Furler will no longer front the band in concert. Michael Tait will be touring with the band as lead singer with Peter making special appearances throughout the year.

Peter will continue with the band and his trademark songwriting and production will remain as he focuses his professional career toward future newsboys recordings.

Michael has been on the road with the band over the past weeks working alongside Peter in what has been a positive and enjoyable experience for both parties. It has been a graceful process that both Peter and Michael have worked through as they prepare to make the change in the coming weeks.

Peter states, “newsboys to me has always been a mission, and I entrust Mike, Jeff, Jody and Duncan to continue all that is in store for us as a band. I’m looking forward to focusing on the band’s studio career and spending time in my own bed after many years in a tour bus and hundreds of thousands of miles on the road.”

Wes Campbell, newsboys manager, explains, “Whilst the decision to replace Peter on the road was a painstaking one, when the idea of dc Talk vocalist Michael Tait was presented, it was a no-brainer to all of us. No one can replace Peter, but we know Michael will bring a new attitude, energy and vocal style that will thrill our audience. To be able to continue a world class show and still have Peter behind the scenes guiding the career and making of newsboys music is a huge opportunity for all of us. It’s amazing that after many years of touring with dc Talk in the 1990’s, that in 2009 our paths would cross once again. It’s an exciting time for all of us.”

“For years dc Talk and newsboys have been family and thus shared the same loyal and adoring fans,” says Michael Tait. “When I received the initial call from newsboys to consider joining the band as lead singer, I was speechless! I immediately sought wise counsel and flooded the heavens with endless prayers for insight and vision, and I soon received a clear and definite peace. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to perform my first show as newsboys’ frontman to an audience of 12,000 people. I was completely wrapped in love and support by newsboys’ fans, who are clearly the best fans on the planet. Now I know this is exactly where I belong in this new and wonderful moment in my life’s history. This is a definite highlight of my career and for my 20+ years of walking with Jesus, and I am humbled, proud and privileged to call myself a newsboy.”

In the coming days, Peter will be releasing a personal statement on the band’s website in more detail.

The band has recently finished recording its new studio album, In The Hands of God, which features Peter as lead vocalist on the entire album. Street date for this record is May 5th.

With five gold albums, sales exceeding six million units, more than 20 No.1 radio hits, and a mantle of Dove Awards as well as Grammy nominations, newsboys has achieved phenomenal success in its two decades together. Known for its amazing live performances and groundbreaking tours, the band continues to sell out festivals and concerts worldwide, satisfying diehard fans and winning new ones in the process.

THE STORY BEHIND "GOD OF THIS CITY"

Take six guys from Belfast - the sort who grew up in and around the troubles, whose faith evolved as roadblocks and bomb scares punctuated their daily routines - and grow them in a church soaked in worship. Open them up to a sense of adventure, to a passion for local churches and prodigals, fill them with tunes like cliff-faces and you’ll be getting some where towards a band like Bluetree. But not quite close enough.

For the final piece of the puzzle you have to go to Thailand. It was there in Pattaya - a city scarred and stained by its reputation as the capital of the world’s sex trade - that the final piece fell into place.

The band had bartered their way into playing‚ at a club - a club which is a brothel. As they did what they only ever do - worshipped - something arrived. It was a song - but one that formed with unusual power and speed. Lyrics and melody formed, calling out a message of hope, a promise of new life for a city so chained by darkness:

You’re the God of this city
You’re the King of these people
You’re the Lord of this nation
You are
You’re the light in this darkness
You’re the hope to the hopeless
You’re the peace to the restless
You are
For there is no-one like our God
There is no-one like our God
Greater things have yet to come
Greater things are still to be done
In this city
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things have still to be done here

That was back in November 2006. They formed a little under a year before with the intention of taking up the worship-leading baton passed down across the last two decades within their home church - CFC in Belfast. The likes of Robin Marks and Jonny Parks had gone before, teaching the guys as they made their way through youth groups about the heart of worship.

Originally a five piece, Bluetree soon found themselves as a regular part of Northern Ireland’s church event scene. The faces - both on and off stage - would often be the same, breeding a strong sense of family and unity. And when they realized that Pete - the DJ who always seemed to be playing at the same events - was making his own travel arrangements, they simply decided to have him join the band and take a place in the van.

A year and a few months on from their trip to Thailand and - in many ways - things have changed for the band. First Chris Tomlin heard and fell under the spell of God Of This City‚ the prophetic song born in front of prostitutes and worshippers alike. Tomlin loved it and the track has become something of an anthem for the Passion‚ generation becoming the title track of their February 2008 album.

It doesn’t take much imagination to work out the intensity of the buzz that’s now surrounding Bluetree. But it’s not the meetings and the planning and the prospects of bigger buzzes that gets them most excited; it’s the chance to spend more time with local churches, cheering them on, providing the soundtracks for prodigals and returns, and the refining of fresh vision and hope for congregations.

VIRGIN BLACK: A Requiem In Three Parts

It's quite an ambitious project: Australia's (and one of the world's) premier doom/Goth band joins the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for a three-CD classical doom requiem. If it sound interesting, you might want to read on - if not, better go cut the grass!

Requiem is not for the faint-hearted, but it is brilliant music. Like a typical classical piece it consists of various themes explored from various musical angles, but with a difference! The first CD, which has not yet been released, features the more symphonic treatment.

THE BEST YET: Switchfoot Takes Stock

It's not a "greatest hits" collection, says Switchfoot, it's the songs that mean something special to them. That's why you'll find "The Shadow Proves The Sunshine" (inspired by South African township life) on this CD/DVD package.

Only the "Deluxe Edition" of this album was released in South Africa, which means you get a CD with 18 songs and a DVD with 14 videos of one of the great modern Christian bands. All the hits are there, from "Dare You To Move" and "Meant To Live" to "We Are One Tonight", but also little early gems like "Chem 6A" and "Concrete Girl".
